Certifications — documents and listings

- NSF/ANSI 53 — certified by IAPMO R&T. Reproduction of the certification document

About these links: Reproduction: GE Appliances' performance data sheet as reproduced on manualshelf.com (the sheet itself points to the certifier's listing at iapmort.org) — this link is not the certifier's own live listing page.
A certification counts as listed here only when a certifier's listing names this cartridge or its system. Anything else is labeled above as what it is — a manufacturer's statement or a reproduction. See how to check a cartridge in the NSF listing.
Verdict
Bottom line: The genuine XWFE's certifications rest on a reproduction of GE's own performance data sheet, not a certifier's live listing, and its RFID chip means an unchipped cheaper cartridge is not a drop-in substitute — check any third-party cartridge's own listing before you buy it.
GE's own performance data sheet for the XWFE states the system is tested and certified against NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and P473 for the claims on that sheet and on iapmort.org, at a service flow of 0.5 gpm. GE refrigerator pages describe the XWFE as certified to reduce 70+ impurities including lead, chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, microplastics, arsenic and select pharmaceuticals.
The drawback: Chipped-key lock-in: the XWFE carries an RFID chip the refrigerator reads to authenticate the filter, so a cheaper unchipped XWF-shape cartridge is not a drop-in substitute in a fridge that expects the chip — the saving route is closed by design. The GE performance sheet also rates capacity at 170 gallons, not the 300 gallons often quoted in retail copy.
Genuine vs third-party notes
Genuine XWFE replaces XWF and is backward compatible with refrigerators that use XWF. When comparing a third-party XWFE cartridge, check two separate things: whether it has a working RFID chip for your fridge, and whether its certification listing names its own element — chip compatibility is not certification.
No specific third-party cartridge has been checked for this page yet. When one is, it will be named here with its own listing check and a dated price.
